HOW I SEE FREEDOM
We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace
But we braved the belly of the Beast
And we lift our gaze not to what stands in between
We close divided because we know to put our future first
Not because we’ll never know our defeat
That everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
Fierce and free
Then love becomes our Legacy
The dawn blooms as we free it
If only we´re brave to see
If only we´re brave to be
In my experience to be free means to be able to stand up for yourself, have your voice heard, and to fight for your own rights. I had an experience once where I was getting in trouble in school, but because of the color of my skin, I was not given the same chance to use my voice to defend myself as the other student with lighter skin-tone. It wasn’t fair.
I chose to create a poem, taken from the lines of Amanda Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb”, because it shows from my point of view what it means to struggle and come out at the end fighting for freedom. When you look at my piece, you’ll see this piece is about everyone who does not have a voice but who has the right to fight for their own freedom and to be brave through the process. I hope my audience understands that people actually have a hard life and not having their freedom causes pain. I hope they remember to always just be considerate.
